Abstract
The Baluchistan Melon Fly (Myiopardalis pardalina (Bigot, 1891) (Diptera: Tephritidae)) is a highly invasive pest. It poses a serious threat to global cucurbit production, destroying more than 90% of the crop during outbreaks. The Baluchistan Melon Fly has a four-stage life cycle (egg, larva, pupa and adult) and has distinct morphological adaptations. The species’ geographic range continues to expand, driven by global trade networks and its adaptation to changing climatic conditions. Infestations of this pest severely reduce yields, undermine food security and destabilize rural economies dependent on cucurbit cultivation. A variety of control strategies are evaluated, including surveillance and quarantine methods, agronomic practices, physical controls, chemical management, biological agents, and emerging genetic tools. It emphasizes the need to adopt integrated pest management (IPM) to strike a strategic balance between effectiveness, ecological sustainability, and operational scalability. Conventional insecticides are often ineffective against its internal feeding larvae, highlighting the need for innovative and integrated management strategies. Protecting cucurbit crops from the Balochistan melon fly is not only an agricultural priority, but also a critical step in protecting rural economies and global food security.
